Description

Hilde, already known from the novel The Poetess of the Nibelungs, faces further adventures in this second volume and, unknowingly, influences the creation of Germany's greatest Grail novel, Parzival. She is commissioned by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to free six-year-old Wolfram von Eschenbach, who is being held captive by an occult secret society in the Arnsburg Fortress near Paderborn. And so our heroine embarks on a dangerous mission with Sir Gerald, with whom she has fallen head over heels in love.

On the journey, the two are joined by Hilde's friend Nilu, an excommunicated African nun whose ingenuity is in demand. For the Knights of the Dark Sun may be fanatical in their quest to find the Grail and thus establish a fabulously powerful empire, but they are not stupid, and when Sir Gerald appears with his two brave shield maidens and a dented chalice, which he claims is the Grail, the knights become suspicious...

About the author

Medieval literary novel

Conny Burian grew up in the Rhineland. She holds a doctorate in English and is an associate professor at the University of Calgary, Canada. She has a particular interest in the literature of the High Middle Ages, which she also explores intensively with students in her university classes. She has presented her research findings at conferences and recently published an article on the Nibelungenlied and Parzival. Her second novel, "Knights of the Dark Sun," is about politically and mystically charged adventures that may have accompanied the creation of the famous Grail Romance in the late 12th century.

Her novels are inspired by courtly literature, the origins of which are often completely obscure. The author tells how Hilde, a headstrong woman of lower nobility, stumbles from one dangerous adventure to the next and, unknowingly, quite accidentally leaves a great legacy for posterity.
