The book brings together Peter Funke's central essays on the history of Greek cities, confederations and federal states from the »Dark Centuries« to the Hellenistic period. These contributions from more than three decades are dedicated to political forms of organization and their diverse structures in the Greek world of states. They cover the formation of Panhellenic identity and the functioning of various forms of cooperation across the polis , as well as social environments within Greek cities and range from the Peloponnesian world of states via Athens to Rhodes.
Peter Funke's studies are characterized not only by his profound knowledge of literary, epigraphic and numismatic evidence and archaeological remains, but also by his great familiarity with Greek regional studies.
